Message from the President of the Sri Lanka Dental Association
Oral health is an integral component of overall health and well-being. In Sri Lanka and across our region, the burden of oral diseases, particularly dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancers remains a significant public health challenge. These conditions not only affect quality of life but also impose a considerable economic and social burden on individuals, families, and the nation.
Addressing this challenge requires a paradigm shift: oral health must be firmly integrated into primary health care systems. Strengthening preventive services, expanding access to care, and promoting health literacy are essential to reduce inequalities and to reach communities most at risk.
At the same time, we are witnessing rapid technological advancements-from digital dentistry and artificial intelligence to minimally invasive techniques and tele-dentistry. Harnessing these innovations offers tremendous opportunities to improve patient outcomes, enhance efficiency, and build a more resilient oral health system.
The way forward for Sri Lanka, and indeed the wider region, lies in a collaborative approach: integrating oral health into universal health coverage, investing in research and education, embracing technological transformation, and strengthening regional partnerships. Together, we can advance towards a future where oral health is recognized as a fundamental human right, embedded in public health policy, and accessible to all.
As the Sri Lanka Dental Association, we remain committed to leading this effort-working with policymakers, health professionals, and communities to ensure a healthier smile for every citizen, and a stronger foundation for the generations to come.
