PROF S B DISSANAYAKE MEMORIAL ORATIONS
Dr. S.B. Dissanayaka (the first student to obtain a BDS degree from Ceylon Dental School) had his post graduate education at Bristol University and obtained the FDSRCS again the first Ceylonese to do so, in 1953.
He was appointed Professor of Dental Surgery and the Head of the Dental School in 1955 at the age of 37 years, the post which he held for 27 years. It was the intellectual ability of Professor S.B.Dissanayake which guided the dental education and the dental profession in their formative years in Sri Lanka.
He was honoured by the University of Peradeniya with an honorary DSc in 1986 in recognition of his services to the university and the dental profession and also by appointing him to the University Council in 1998 after his retirement. His vision for Dentistry stemmed from his world view which was one of simplicity and beauty. Prof. Dissanayaka always chose the simple and beautiful method of treatment in the practice of dentistry rather than the complex.
